CQI-28 Training: Traceability

CQI-28 training is a hands-on programme built on AIAG‘s Traceability Guideline, for teams that will apply it.

CQI-28 is a guideline developed for setting up and managing traceability systems in the automotive supply chain. It was published in December 2018.

Why does it matter?

The real test of traceability comes at the moment of a recall. When a problem is detected, how many hours does it take you to answer this question: which parts were affected, where were they shipped, which raw material lot did they come from?

If the answer is not narrow enough, thousands of unaffected parts also fall within the recall scope. The difference is direct cost.

Traceability is therefore not a labelling exercise but a design decision: what will the lot size be, at which points will records be taken, how long will the data be kept, how will the systems connect to each other.

It is also directly related to product safety and conformity requirements; it is one of the fundamental capabilities the PSCR role rests on.

Who should attend?

  • Quality managers and quality system officers
  • Production and logistics managers
  • IT systems and MES officers
  • Product safety and conformity representatives
  • Teams involved in recall processes

There are no prerequisites.

Training Content

Fundamentals

  • The scope of traceability and its effect on business results
  • Its relationship with IATF 16949 and customer-specific requirements
  • Forward and backward traceability

System design

  • Lot identification and the lot size decision
  • Determining the recording points
  • Labelling and identification methods
  • Data structure, retention period and access
  • Supplier and customer interfaces

Implementation and testing

  • Testing the system with a recall scenario
  • Measuring the response time
  • Detecting the break points
  • The link with product safety processes

Practical exercises

Participants apply the method using sample scenarios. In in-house programmes the exercises are run on your own processes and data.

Learning Outcomes

  • Designing a traceability system
  • Justifying the lot size decision
  • Determining the data structure and retention requirements
  • Testing the system with a recall scenario
  • Detecting the break points

Duration and Participation Options

Duration: 1–2 days in open-enrolment programmes. In in-house programmes, set according to the scope and depth of the practical work.

Participation type: Open enrolment or in-house.

Training method: In person (at your organization or in our training room), live online, on-demand recording.

Obtaining the manuals: AIAG publications are copyright-protected and are not provided as part of the training. Participants need access to the current edition.

Dates: Set according to demand.

Certificate of Attendance

Participants who complete the training receive a certificate of attendance. The certificate includes the participant’s name, training scope, date and duration. It can be used as evidence of competence in your assessor competence records and in customer audits.

Frequently Asked Questions About CQI-28 Training

When was CQI-28 published?

It was published in December 2018.

What is the real test of traceability?

The moment of a recall. It is how quickly, and with how narrow a scope, you can answer which parts were affected, where they were shipped and which raw material lot they came from.

Why does the lot size matter?

The larger the lot, the wider the recall scope in case of a problem. Unaffected parts falling within the scope is direct cost.

How do we test our system?

By setting up a recall scenario and measuring the response time. This drill exposes the break points in the system before a real event occurs.

How long does CQI-28 training take?

Open-enrolment programmes take 1 day. In in-house programmes, 2 days are recommended if the work will be done on your own system.

Do you provide the guideline?

No. AIAG publications are copyright-protected and are not provided as part of the training.
