What Is a PSCR?

The PSCR (Product Safety and Conformity Representative) is the representative responsible for product safety and product conformity in the automotive supply chain.

It has replaced the previously used product safety officer (PSB) role.

Tasks

The role covers the entire product life cycle: from safety goals in the development phase to series production monitoring, from deviation management to field incidents.

The VDA Product Compliance Volume 2 guideline published in July 2026 explicitly defines the difference between the management and the execution of the tasks. Tasks can be delegated to several persons, functions or roles; the overall responsibility, however, cannot be delegated and remains with top management.

Is appointment mandatory?

The VDA recommendation is to appoint one PSCR per production site. In addition, many OEMs stipulate it within their customer-specific requirements.

The two areas the role focuses on, product safety and product conformity, rest on different legal bases and must be managed separately.

Defining, allocating and documenting PSCR tasks is addressed hands-on in the PSCR training. For the role’s audit interfaces, see also the VDA 6.5 product audit and VDA 6.3 process audit programmes.
