Electroplating is the process of depositing a thin metal layer onto a metal surface using electric current. It is also referred to as electrolytic plating.
In the automotive industry its main purposes are to provide corrosion resistance, increase wear resistance, provide electrical conductivity and achieve appearance.
How is it audited in automotive?
Electroplating is a special process: the thickness, adhesion strength and corrosion performance of the plating cannot be fully verified without destroying the part. Quality assurance therefore rests on process control rather than product inspection.
In the automotive supply chain these processes are audited with AIAG’s CQI-11 Plating System Assessment manual. The current edition is the 3rd, and the self-assessment is expected to be carried out at least once a year.

- Zinc and zinc alloy electrolytic plating

In high-strength steels, baking is applied after plating due to the risk of hydrogen embrittlement; oven temperature control and its records are among the most frequently questioned topics in audits.
Not to be confused with CQI-12
On the shop floor both manuals are loosely called “coating.” CQI-12, however, covers paint and surface coating processes: conversion coating, anodizing, powder coating, spray and dip coatings. Plants running both processes must carry out two separate assessments.
