MSA Training: Measurement Systems Analysis

MSA training is designed for teams who want to evaluate the reliability of their measurement systems and prevent wrong decisions caused by measurement.

MSA (Measurement Systems Analysis) determines how much of the variation produced by a measurement system comes from the actual product and how much from the measurement system itself. It is published by AIAG; the edition in force is the 4th.

Why is it critical?

Let’s start with a simple truth: if your measurement system is not reliable, neither is any decision produced from it.

This affects a wider area than assumed:

  • You may be scrapping conforming product as nonconforming
  • You may be shipping nonconforming product to the customer as conforming
  • Your process capability calculations may be mistaking measurement noise for process variation
  • The signals on your control charts may be coming from the measurement, not the process

MSA is therefore a prerequisite for SPC work. A capability study carried out without validating the measurement system is not reliable.

Isn’t calibration enough?

This is the most frequent misconception in practice.

Calibration shows whether the measuring device reads correctly against a known reference. MSA measures how repeatable and reproducible the device’s results are under real usage conditions, with real operators, on real parts.

Three operators measuring the same part with a caliper that has a valid calibration can get different results. Calibration does not show this; Gage R&R does.

Who should attend?

  • Quality engineers and quality managers
  • Measurement and laboratory officers
  • Calibration officers
  • Process and production engineers
  • Production shift supervisors
  • IATF 16949 internal auditors
  • Supplier quality development teams

No advanced statistics knowledge is required; the basic concepts are covered within the training.

Training Content

Fundamentals

  • The measurement system concept: device, operator, method, environment, part
  • Sources of variation and measurement error
  • Resolution and discrimination capability
  • The differences between calibration, verification and MSA

The properties of the measurement system

  • Bias
  • Linearity
  • Stability
  • Repeatability
  • Reproducibility

Gage R&R studies

Planning the study, selecting parts and operators, determining the measurement order, data collection, calculation methods, interpreting the results and the acceptance criteria are covered in detail.

Attribute data analysis

Agreement analysis for pass/fail type measurements, between-operator and within-operator consistency, and agreement against the reference are addressed.

Using the results

Reflecting MSA outputs in the Control Plan, presenting them in the PPAP file, improvement decisions and its role in measurement system selection are shown.

Practical exercises

Participants perform Gage R&R calculations on real data sets and interpret the results. In in-house programmes the work is done on your own measurement systems.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analysing measurement system variation
  • Planning and conducting a Gage R&R study
  • Performing bias, linearity and stability studies
  • Applying agreement analysis for attribute data
  • Interpreting results and making improvement decisions
  • Connecting MSA results to the control plan and SPC

Duration and Participation Options

Duration: 2 days in open-enrolment programmes. In in-house programmes, planned as 1–3 days depending on the scope and depth of the practical work.

Participation type: Open enrolment or in-house.

Training method: In person (at your organization or in our training room), live online, on-demand recording.

Obtaining the manuals: AIAG and VDA publications are copyright-protected and are not provided as part of the training. Participants need access to the current edition.

Dates: Set according to demand.

Certificate of Attendance

Participants who complete the training receive a certificate of attendance. The certificate includes the participant’s name, training scope, date and duration. It can be used as evidence of competence in your competence records and in customer audits.

Related Trainings

MSA and SPC are frequently requested together; since measurement reliability directly affects the accuracy of SPC data, a combined programme is recommended.

Beyond Training: Implementation Support

  • Conducting Gage R&R studies together
  • Building the measurement system inventory
  • Setting up the calibration and MSA programme
  • Preparing the measurement system files for PPAP
  • Preparation before the customer audit

You can make use of our consulting services in every area where support is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions About MSA Training

Which is the current edition of MSA?

AIAG MSA 4th edition is in force.

We already calibrate — is MSA still necessary?

Yes. Calibration shows whether the device reads correctly against a known reference. MSA measures how repeatable and reproducible the device’s results are under real usage conditions, with real operators. The two answer different questions.

What is Gage R&R?

The study that determines the repeatability and reproducibility variation of the measurement system. It separately reveals the difference when the same part is remeasured by the same operator and the difference between different operators.

What is the relationship between MSA and SPC?

MSA is the prerequisite of SPC. A capability study carried out without validating the measurement system is not reliable; the signals on control charts may be coming from the measurement, not the process.

Is MSA done for attribute data too?

Yes. Agreement analysis is applied for pass/fail type measurements; between-operator and within-operator consistency and agreement against the reference are evaluated.

Do I need statistics knowledge for MSA training?

No advanced statistics knowledge is required. The basic concepts are covered in the first part of the training.

Can we work with our own measurement systems?

Yes. In in-house programmes the practical exercises are run on your own measurement systems.

How long does MSA training take?

Open-enrolment programmes take 2 days. If a combined programme with SPC is preferred, the duration is set according to the scope.
