CQI-24 Training: DRBFM Design Review

CQI-24 training is a hands-on programme built on AIAG‘s Design Review Based on Failure Mode (DRBFM) guideline, for teams that will apply it.

CQI-24 is the reference guideline defining the DRBFM (Design Review Based on Failure Mode) method. The starting point of the method is a simple observation: the majority of problems arise not from completely new designs but from changes made to an existing design.

Why does it matter?

DRBFM is not an alternative to FMEA but its complement. FMEA analyses the whole system; DRBFM focuses attention on the change itself and its effects.

The essence of the method is opening the change and its effects up for discussion. Why the designer made the change, what could be affected and which interactions may have been overlooked are questioned by a team drawn from different disciplines.

The place where the most value is produced in practice is this discussion: more than the document, what matters is the meeting where the right questions get asked.

Who should attend?

  • Design and product development engineers
  • Process development engineers
  • Quality engineers
  • Project managers
  • Test and validation officers

There are no prerequisites.

Training Content

Fundamentals

  • The starting point and logic of DRBFM
  • The power of the change-focused approach
  • Its relationship with, and difference from, FMEA

The method

  • Defining the change and determining its scope
  • Deriving the affected functions and interfaces
  • Discussing the potential failure modes and their effects
  • Deciding on measures and verification
  • Documenting the results

Putting it into practice

  • Running the review meeting
  • Team composition and moderation
  • Transferring the outputs to the FMEA and the control plan
  • Its place within the APQP phases

Practical exercises

Participants apply the method using sample scenarios. In in-house programmes the exercises are run on your own processes and data.

Learning Outcomes

  • Applying the DRBFM method
  • Deriving the effects of a change systematically
  • Running an effective review meeting
  • Transferring the outputs to the FMEA and the control plan
  • Catching design change risks early

Duration and Participation Options

Duration: 1–2 days in open-enrolment programmes. In in-house programmes, set according to the scope and depth of the practical work.

Participation type: Open enrolment or in-house.

Training method: In person (at your organization or in our training room), live online, on-demand recording.

Obtaining the manuals: AIAG publications are copyright-protected and are not provided as part of the training. Participants need access to the current edition.

Dates: Set according to demand.

Certificate of Attendance

Participants who complete the training receive a certificate of attendance. The certificate includes the participant’s name, training scope, date and duration. It can be used as evidence of competence in your assessor competence records and in customer audits.

Frequently Asked Questions About CQI-24 Training

What is DRBFM?

It is the design review method based on failure modes. It focuses attention on the change made in the design and its effects; it rests on the observation that the majority of problems arise from changes.

Does DRBFM replace FMEA?

No, it complements it. FMEA analyses the whole system; DRBFM focuses on the change itself. The two are used together.

When is it applied?

When a change is made to an existing design, when it is carried over to a new application, or when the material, supplier or process changes.

Who should attend the meeting?

Design, process, quality, test and, when necessary, production representatives. The value of the method comes from different disciplines asking questions; single-discipline meetings stay at the surface.

How long does CQI-24 training take?

Open-enrolment programmes take 1 day. In in-house programmes the work is done on your own design change.

Do you provide the guideline?

No. AIAG publications are copyright-protected and are not provided as part of the training.
