AS 9100 training is designed for organizations building or running a quality management system in the aviation, space and defence supply chain.
AS 9100 defines the aerospace-specific application of ISO 9001 and is governed by the IAQG. For organizations supplying the sector, it is a de facto market entry requirement.
Current status and the IA9100 transition
The version in force is AS 9100 D (2016).
The standard is going through a revision process and is expected to be republished under the name IA9100. The name change reflects the move from “Aerospace Standard” to “International Aerospace” and the global nature of the supply chain.
The revision is planned to align with ISO 9001:2026; publication is expected between late 2026 and 2027. A three-year transition period is anticipated after publication.
The expected changes include preserving the aerospace-specific clauses such as product safety, configuration management and counterfeit part prevention, and modernizing the areas of supplier management, digital assurance, data integrity, ethics and information security.
The practical consequence: Organizations starting the certification process today proceed against the current standard. Starting the gap analysis early, however, lets you complete the transition within your normal audit cycle. For exact dates and transition rules, we recommend following your certification body.
The clauses that set AS 9100 apart from ISO 9001
- Product safety and the management of safety-critical items
- Prevention of counterfeit parts
- Configuration management
- Applying risk management at the operational level
- Special processes and approved source lists
- First article inspection
- Monitoring on-time delivery performance
- Supply chain oversight and approval authorities
Who should attend?
- Quality managers and quality system officers
- Engineers working in the aerospace supply chain
- Configuration management officers
- Purchasing and supplier quality teams
- Internal auditors
- Senior managers who will lead the certification process
Knowledge of ISO 9001 makes participation easier but is not a prerequisite.

Frequently Asked Questions About AS 9100 Training
Which is the current version of AS 9100?
AS 9100 D (2016) is in force. It will remain valid until the revised version is published.
Is AS 9100 becoming IA9100?
Yes, the standard is expected to be republished under the name IA9100. The name change reflects the move from ‘Aerospace Standard’ to ‘International Aerospace’ and the global nature of the supply chain.
When will IA9100 be published?
The revision is planned to align with ISO 9001:2026; publication is expected between late 2026 and 2027. For exact dates we recommend following your certification body.
How long will the transition take?
A three-year transition period is anticipated after publication. The exact duration and rules will be announced with the publication.
Does it make sense to start the certification process now?
Yes. Certification continues against the current standard. Starting the gap analysis early lets you complete the transition within your normal audit cycle.
What is the difference between AS 9100 and ISO 9001?
AS 9100 adds aerospace-specific requirements on top of ISO 9001: product safety, counterfeit part prevention, configuration management, special processes, first article inspection and supply chain oversight, among others.
Do I need ISO 9001 knowledge for AS 9100 training?
It is not a prerequisite. The basic concepts are covered within the training; for participants with ISO 9001 knowledge, the weight shifts to the aerospace-specific requirements.
How long does AS 9100 training take?
Open-enrolment programmes take 2 days. In-house programmes are planned as 1-3 days depending on content density.
