ISO 45001 Training: Occupational Health and Safety Management System

ISO 45001 training is designed for organizations that want to establish, run or audit an occupational health and safety management system.

ISO 45001 is the international occupational health and safety management system standard published by ISO. It shares the harmonized structure common to the other management system standards, which is a significant convenience for organizations running an integrated system.

National OH&S legislation already imposes comprehensive obligations in most countries. ISO 45001’s contribution is enabling you to manage those obligations within a systematic, measurable framework instead of scattered practices.

The difference between legal compliance and a management system

Meeting your legal obligations does not mean you meet the requirements of ISO 45001 — and the reverse is also true.

Legislation defines the minimum conditions. ISO 45001 adds the following on top:

  • Systematic hazard identification and risk assessment
  • Mechanisms for worker consultation and participation
  • Setting OH&S objectives and measuring performance
  • The continual improvement cycle
  • Managing risks originating from contractors and suppliers
  • Demonstrable leadership responsibility of top management

The situation most frequently encountered in audits is practice that is legally compliant but not systematic: a risk assessment exists but has not been updated, training was delivered but its effectiveness was never measured.

Worker participation: the most frequently skipped requirement

The most distinctive element separating ISO 45001 from earlier OH&S approaches is the weight given to worker consultation and participation processes.

The standard expects the views of non-managerial workers to be sought on specific topics and their participation in decision processes to be ensured. There must be demonstrable records of this.

In practice this requirement is often reduced to a signature list. What the auditor looks for is that the mechanism actually works: who was consulted on what, what the feedback was, how the decision was affected.

Who should attend?

  • Occupational safety specialists and occupational physicians
  • OH&S committee members and worker representatives
  • Quality and integrated management system officers
  • Production, maintenance and site managers
  • Human resources managers
  • Internal auditors
  • Teams responsible for contractor and subcontractor management

There are no prerequisites.

Frequently Asked Questions About ISO 45001 Training

Is an ISO 45001 certificate legally mandatory?

No. National OH&S legislation imposes its own obligations; the ISO 45001 certificate is voluntary. In practice, however, it can be required through customer contracts, tender specifications and supply chain expectations.

If we comply with the legislation, do we also comply with ISO 45001?

Not necessarily. Legislation defines the minimum conditions; ISO 45001 adds systematic risk management, worker participation, objective setting, performance measurement and continual improvement requirements on top.

What does the worker participation requirement mean?

The standard expects the views of non-managerial workers to be sought on specific topics and their participation in decision processes to be ensured. There must be demonstrable records; a signature list alone is not sufficient.

Can we run ISO 45001 together with ISO 9001?

Yes. Both standards share the harmonized structure. Sections such as context, leadership, competence, documented information and internal audit can be merged into a single system; the certification audits can also be combined.

What is the difference between ISO 45001 and SA 8000?

ISO 45001 focuses on occupational health and safety. SA 8000 has a broader social accountability scope: workers’ rights, child labour, forced labour, discrimination, working hours and remuneration.

Are contractors and subcontractors within the scope?

Yes. The standard requires the OH&S risks of procurement processes and contractor activities to be managed. This is one of the areas most frequently left incomplete in practice.

Are there prerequisites for ISO 45001 training?

There are no prerequisites. Knowledge of OH&S legislation or management systems makes participation easier.

How long does ISO 45001 training take?

Open-enrolment programmes take 2 days. In-house programmes are planned as 1-3 days depending on content density.
