2026–2027 Quality Training Plan: Which Topics Are Mandatory, Which Can Wait?

The hardest part of preparing a training budget is drawing the line between “it would be nice” and “there will be a problem if it isn’t done.” The busy revision calendar of 2026 has shifted that line markedly.

This article offers a priority framework for your quality training plan for late 2026 and 2027.

Category 1: Cannot be postponed

In these topics, delay means certificate risk or contractual nonconformity.

SA 8000:2026 — for certified organizations Mandatory training and self-assessment must be completed by 31 December 2026. That date is not in your 2027 budget but in the remaining months of 2026. Since the transition can only be made at a recertification audit, you also need to check your certificate cycle.

ISO 19011:2026 — anyone with internal auditors No transition period was granted. It was published on 27 May 2026 and the 2018 edition was withdrawn. Your auditor competence records are expected to be based on the current edition. There is no defined period to wait for.

PSCR — for automotive suppliers The VDA guideline was renewed in July 2026 and the role was redefined. The competence records of your appointed PSCRs need to be updated. And since this is an obligation stemming from OEM and customer-specific requirements, it does not belong in the “optional development” category.

Category 2: Must be planned in 2027

Topics whose deadline is in 2029 but whose training planning needs to be done in 2027.

ISO 14001:2026 transition The three-year transition period ends in the first half of 2029. But once gap analysis, document updates, training and at least one full internal audit cycle are taken into account, you are looking at 12–18 months of work. If you can piggyback the transition onto your existing surveillance or recertification audit you pay no additional audit cost — but that requires planning early.

ISO 9001:2026 transition Final publication is expected in September 2026, followed by a three-year transition period. The same logic applies: organizations that leave it to the final year face both an additional audit day and calendar congestion.

IATF 16949 2nd edition — automotive suppliers

IATF has confirmed that work on the new edition will begin after the revised ISO 9001 is published; revision activities are expected to start in October 2026 and the new edition to be published in 2027. No committee draft has been published yet, and the only valid edition for certification is IATF 16949:2016. The transition period and certification arrangements will be announced through an IATF Stakeholder Communiqué once the timeline is finalized.

What this means for the 2027 budget: budgeting the transition training now is premature. However, since the new edition will be built directly on the ISO 9001:2026 clauses, taking the ISO 9001 revision training in 2027 also means preparing the ground for the IATF transition. Set up the two topics as a sequential programme rather than as separate line items.

AS 9100 → IA9100 — aerospace and defence

The name of the standard is changing. The “IA” abbreviation stands for International Aerospace and reflects IAQG’s intention to formally move the standard into a global framework across the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Publication is expected right after ISO 9001:2026, in the last quarter of 2026; some sources point to mid-2027. IAQG has stated that it will grant organizations three years from the publication of the new standard; existing AS9100 Rev D certificates remain valid throughout that period — until approximately 2029.

On the content side, the aerospace-specific clauses (product safety, configuration management, counterfeit part prevention) are retained; supplier management and digital assurance are being strengthened. Running the ISO 9001 and IA9100 transitions in a single programme provides both a time and a cost advantage here too, because the base standard is the same.

ISO 45001 revision — OH&S

The DIS was registered in April 2026 and the 12-week international ballot began on 16 June 2026. Final publication is expected in 2027, followed by a three-year transition period, meaning a compliance deadline of approximately 2030.

The first thing to do on this topic in 2027 is to monitor. Once the publication date is confirmed, plan your OH&S team’s transition training for the next budget period. More explicit treatment of psychosocial risks and the impact of climate change on OH&S are among the prominent topics in the draft.

Category 3: Contract-dependent

Whether these topics are mandatory depends not on you but on your customer.

AIAG & VDA SPC Published on 1 July 2026; the previous AIAG edition dated from 2005. The manual is not a binding requirement, but OEMs are expected to ask for alignment with the new framework. If you produce for both markets, this transition is also an opportunity to eliminate your parallel-system burden.

CQI assessments Which CQI applies to you depends on the processes you run and your customer’s specific requirements. The self-assessment is expected to be carried out at least once a year, and you need to be able to demonstrate the competence of the person conducting it.

The critical point: even if you purchase these processes, the responsibility for verifying your supplier’s conformity is yours. If you have plating done for you, you need an auditor who knows the relevant manual even though you do not plate yourself.

Category 4: Can be postponed, but high return

Not mandatory, but typically the ones with the highest return on investment: problem solving, error proofing, cost of poor quality analysis, layered process audits.

Keep these in the flexible part of the budget. Plan them with the resources remaining after the mandatory topics are covered.

Three practical notes for budget planning

Combined programmes reduce cost. When the common sections of several standards or several CQIs are covered once, the total duration shortens. ISO 9001 + ISO 14001, CQI-11 + CQI-12, SPC + MSA are frequently requested combinations.

An in-house programme is not always more expensive than an open one. Once your participant count exceeds five, an in-house programme usually becomes more economical, and because it works through your own processes it produces directly usable output.

Factor in calendar congestion. In the final year of transition periods, both training and audit calendars fill up. The cost advantage of early planning comes less from the training fee than from avoiding that congestion.
