Suppliers producing parts for American and German automotive customers at the same time have been running two separate statistical process control systems for years. Different terminology, different capability calculation rules, different audit expectations.
The joint AIAG & VDA SPC manual published on 1 July 2026 brings this duality to an end.
What was the problem?
AIAG’s approach was application- and control-chart-oriented. VDA’s prescribed a statistically stricter framework.
The result: a process could count as capable in one framework while requiring a different control chart or a different calculation in the other. A supplier producing for both markets carried two separate sets of documentation, two separate calculations and two separate training burdens for the same process.
That meant direct cost. And it was less a technical problem than a harmonization problem.
A twenty-year delay
There is another dimension: the 2nd edition of the previous AIAG SPC manual dated from 2005.
In the twenty years since, both statistical approaches and manufacturing technologies have changed. Automation, data collection methods, measurement systems, production speeds — none of it is as it was in 2005.
As the second Core Tool harmonized by AIAG and VDA after FMEA, this manual serves both to unify and to update.
What is changing?
The six control loops approach. SPC activities are now classified by control purpose rather than by chart type. The right question is no longer “which chart should I use” but “what am I trying to control.” Real-time process monitoring, tolerance-based conformity control, post-process improvement analysis and audit-based loops are addressed separately.
SPC defined as a managed process. The manual moves SPC away from being the quality technician’s chart-filling job and positions it as a structured organizational control system with explicit implementation requirements.
Closed-loop integration with the other Core Tools. SPC is no longer an isolated post-production monitoring activity; it is an integrated link in a risk management chain together with APQP, PFMEA, Control Plan, MSA and PPAP.
A link between PFMEA and sampling frequency. This is one of the most practical innovations. High-impact failure modes require tighter sampling. A demonstrable chain of logic is now expected between your risk assessment and your control plan.
A clearer distinction between performance and capability. Process performance and process capability indices have been defined more explicitly; when and under which conditions each index is used has become clearer.
Unified special cause detection rules. The old differences of opinion between AIAG and VDA on which signal rules count as valid have been resolved.
An expanded chart toolbox. While classic Shewhart charts remain the foundation, methods aimed at detecting small shifts have also been brought into the framework.
Alignment with ISO statistical standards. Harmonization was achieved with the relevant ISO standards on control charts, process capability and performance, and statistical terminology.
How binding is it for you?
The manual is not a binding requirement; it is an advisory document. In practice, however, OEMs are expected to ask their suppliers to align with the new framework increasingly often.
Concrete effects:
- Your control plans should be reviewed against the new sampling logic
- Your capability calculation method and reporting format should be updated
- Your PFMEA-to-SPC link should be established and demonstrable
- Your quality team’s terminology should move to the common language
- You should be able to justify which framework you work to in customer audits
